A weekend trip took us first to Arnhem, where we sampled the delights and sights with Evaline and Felix in their hometown.
Early the next morning, we all set off to Friesland to go sailing with Felix's father Marinus on the Waddensee (the actual sea). It was on this drive that we realised how unbelievably flat Holland truly is... but on the plus side, the view was never ending!
Slightly alarmed that we could freeze to death out on the boat (thanks to insistent warnings from Marinus), we donned some sexy sailing coveralls and set sail. Well, technically motor as we had to first travel an hour down the river to the sea... It didn't take long for Captain Sack to have his inaugural experience as skipper, later replaced by Captain Sponge at the helm.
The following hours at sea were simply bliss; plenty of food, a cheeky wine or two, sunshine, calm waters and some interesting conversations with our two real captains - both very seasoned sailors.
Finally we headed back inland to be rewarded with a traditional Dutch sailor's feast, prepared by Marinus' wife. Bellies very full, we were chauffeured back to Amersfoot via the monumental dike over the Zuiderzee (and accompanying sunset).
